‘What for? Your body is paying me a compliment, and I’m flattered.’

He gave her a wry look. ‘We both think you’re lovely.’

Janet laughed. ‘Thank you, both.’ Her face sobered and she looked him in the eye. ‘Harry, yesterday, remember, when I asked you what you’d like for your birthday?’

He had a sudden, horrible feeling that he knew what was coming and he could feel the heat in his face. ‘I remember.’

‘Do you remember what you said? Of course you do.

When I asked you what you wanted, you said ‘you’. I don’t think you realised you’d said it aloud, or maybe you sub-vocalised it, but I have acute hearing, Harry, and I heard you.’

He gestured helplessly. ‘It sort of slipped out. You’re right, I didn’t know I’d said it aloud.’

‘Did you mean it?’ There was a tone to her voice that suggested the answer was important to her.

Harry nodded. ‘Absolutely.’

‘And now you’ve seen the reality you could only imagine before? What now? Still feel the same?’

‘More than ever.’

She smiled, stepping forward to kiss him lightly on the lips. ‘Good,’ she said. She paused, then, ‘Harry, when you said ‘you’ when I asked you what you wanted, what was in your mind?’ Harry flushed, and gestured helplessly. Janet smiled. ‘Making love, perhaps?’ He nodded, unable to speak, a huge lump in his throat. Her smile faded. ‘Harry, love, after you left yesterday, I couldn’t get what you said out of my head. I know I’m older, nearly twice your age, but I like to think I still look good.’

‘Better than just good!’

‘Thank you. Last night, Harry, after I went to bed, I lay there, just thinking about you, and what you’d said. And do you know what I did?’ He shook his head, wondering. ‘I
